The Michigan Wolverines have new leadership at the top of the men’s basketball program in head coach Dusty May, and it appears he is getting some administrative support in a position just opened by the athletic department.

U-M posted a “Special Assistant To The Head Coach” position for the program, dated March 28 and runs through April 4. Whether it is a wide-ranging search or not, state law requires that the job be posted for seven days.

“Position will attend daily practices and competitions,” the job posting reads. “The position will be responsible for helping foster an environment that promotes the well-being and personal development of the student-athletes. Responsible for a commitment to adhering to university, Big 10 Conference and NCAA policies, procedures, and regulations. Establish and maintain effective interactions with the university community, alumni, media and the public.”

Responsibilities, as outlined by the university, include:

  • Assist with special video and or administrative projects and support as assigned by the Head Coach 15%
  • Oversee Graduate Manager on the coordination of the Head Coaches officiating evaluations 5 %
  • Assists the Video Coordinator to compile and provide initial analysis of future opponents 20%
  • Oversee Team Blue Student Manager program 5 %
  • Assist in Creating specialized recruiting film edits and statistical analysis 5 %
  • Complete other Duties assigned by the Head Coach, Director of Operations and Director of Program Personnel 15%
  • Assists in Organizing Team Travel, meals, and practice times 5%
  • Assist in Coordinating Visiting team Shootarounds and schedules 5%
  • Assist in coordinating on-campus official and unofficial visits, and in developing recruiting materials 5%
  • Create and coordinate special statistical and analytics project sand requests from coaching staff 15 %
  • Co-liaison to the Academic Success program 5%

Michigan fans may very well take the opportunity to apply, but required qualifications include 2-3 years of administrative support staff experience, an understanding of NCAA and compliance rules and good communication skills at each level of the organization, in addition to a four-year college degree. NCAA working or playing experience would also be desired, in addition to tech and computer skills.

May is busy working on building out his coaching and support staff, in addition to fielding a roster for the 2024-25 season. Might former head coach John Beilein, who is available, be a candidate for the job?

It seems in some capacity, May wants to have Beilein back and around the program.

“I revere coaches, and [if] I see a legendary coach… I’m going to stick my head in and watch them practice, see how they teach,” May said during his introductory press conference at Michigan. “I revere coaches, and you have legendary coaches that have represented this institution and hung banners … absolutely.

“Whatever role he wants, I’m going to embrace it because I’m going to learn from him and use that information.”

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel is on board with a bigger role for Beilein, too. The two worked together in helping seal the deal with May coming to Michigan. Manuel said that Beilein will be a bigger part of the operation moving forward.

“John and I will continue to talk,” Manuel said on Tuesday. “It was great reconnecting with him and reestablishing the great relationship we had before. He’s definitely going to be around more.”
