May started with an opening statement, discussing another big week ahead. Michigan not only plays Purdue with a chance to be in first place in the conference with a win, but will also take on arch rival Ohio State Sunday in Columbus.
“We’re excited to be in position for this to be an extremely big game, with Purdue coming in to Crisler tomorrow,” May said. “I challenge our fans to bring the energy, enthusiasm and to create and continue to build on the home court environment that we continue to create.”
Michigan fell by 27 points to Purdue last time around, falling in West Lafayette. May was asked if he will lean into the “revenge factor” when attempting to motivate his team.
“We don’t use the word ‘revenge,’ but we have to play much better basketball,” May said. “We need to make some adjustments schematically, but more importantly our mindset.

“But that was a tough night. They deserved to win how they did, and I thought we deserved the result that we got that night.
“But we’re excited to see our growth, our improvement from then until now. It’s part of the process. That night, a lot didn’t go right for us. A lot went wrong. But Purdue caused most of it, so it’s gonna be a tough game, but we’re excited to go out and compete.”
May believes Michigan learned some lessons from the Purdue loss that it has applied since.
“We talk about until you’ve lived it and until you’ve experienced it … you can talk about things all you want,” May noted. “But four minutes to go, Indiana ties the game. The four-minute media timeout, it’s three and some change. And we come out of the timeout and go on a 4-0 run in that environment, as loud as it was. I’m not sure that, without the Purdue experience, that we handle it as [well]. We were unfazed. I’m not sure that without that experience — maybe we do, maybe we don’t. But it definitely felt like we were unfazed when the arena lit up.”
