Moore discussed how Michigan got a big 24-3 lead but almost squandered it, winning only 27-24. It was the same score as the victory over USC, but the feeling in the locker room could have been a bit different since the Wolverines dominated the first half against the Gophers.
“Like I told the team in the locker room, it was just a tale of tale of two halves for us,” Moore said. “We played really well in the first half, not as good in the second half. The energy we had, but the execution wasn’t there.
“Me as a coach, I’ve got to make sure I do a good job of turning that thing up in the second half for them, making sure they were ready to go. They were — we just didn’t execute at the level we needed to.
“I think when you feel like you got a lead and building on it and get momentum and then you come out in the second half, let a couple things get away from you, it just feels different. We’re happy we got the win, but not happy, not satisfied with how we got the win.”
Michigan’s defense was lights out early but allowed some yardage and three touchdown drives in the second half.

“Really on the touchdowns, we gave them a short field on one and then we gave up the punt return,” Moore noted. “The field position we were putting our defense in wasn’t helping the defense. When they had to drive the field a long time, it took them some time to get down there, and for our defense, I thought there were a lot of really good things to build on. From a special teams standpoint and an offensive standpoint, we’ve got to do things to make sure we don’t put them in those bad positions.”
Michigan is headed to Washington to play its first road game of the season next week, set to take on the Huskies, led by head coach Jedd Fisch, a former U-M assistant.
“I think one, obviously the venue we’re going to be playing at is going to be pretty cool,” Moore pointed out. “I’ve seen it and looked at it, know it’s going to be loud and going to be fun. Never played there. Never coached there, so that’s going to be awesome.
“On the road, you’re with a pack of people — with that group. It is a little different, but we’re excited to get on the road, excited to get to work. Another good football team, and Coach Fisch is a good football coach, but for us, we’re just ready to keep pounding away.”
