TheWolverine.com has learned Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore is promoting quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell to offensive coordinator, backfilling the role vacated by Moore after Jim Harbaugh’s departure.

Moore said during his introductory press conference that he was not sure he would be calling plays in 2024, but hinted that he might have someone in mind. As it turns out, the ideal candidate was in front of him all along.

Campbell just wrapped his second season with the Michigan football program and first as the team’s quarterbacks coach. He led a room helmed by J.J. McCarthy, who threw for 2,991 yards with 22 touchdowns and four interceptions during U-M’s 15-0 season and College Football Playoff National Championship. McCarthy declared for the 2024 NFL Draft and is considered a potential first-round selection.

He called plays in the 2023 season opener against East Carolina with Moore serving a one-game suspension over alleged recruiting violations. In that contest, McCarthy went 26-for-30 for 280 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-3 victory.

Campbell joined the Michigan staff in 2022 as an analyst, playing a key role on the offensive support staff after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the offensive coordinator at Old Dominion. The Monarchs averaged 28.5 points and 385.4 yards per game during the 2021 season.

Before joining Old Dominion, Campbell spent time with Big Ten rival Penn State as an offensive analyst from 2017-19 on James Franklin’s staff, working with the quarterbacks and assisting with scouting and game planning.

Campbell’s other coaching stops along the way include West Virginia Wesleyan as a graduate assistant (2009-10), wide receivers coach at Tiffin University (2011) and assistant head coach/offensive coordinator at Alderson Broaddus from 2012-16.

One of Campbell’s key duties this offseason will be developing and naming a successor to McCarthy at Michigan. It is possible the team seeks help via the transfer portal, but clarity on that search may not come until after spring football is completed.

“Every single one in that room has taken a step way in the positive direction,” Campbell told The Wolverine at CFP National Championship media day. “I can go way down the line. I’ll just start going down the list. Jack Tuttle, is a veteran guy who came from this spread offense and coming into more of an under-center, play-action, pro-style offense. So just learning a lot there. Alex Orji, his fundamentals, footwork and timing has been insane in his development.

Jayden Denegal might be the most improved player on the entire roster. Great accuracy and a huge future for him. Then you throw in Davis Warren, he went through some injuries this year, but his footwork. Cleaning up some of that stuff and he’s playing on time and playing as confident and fast as you can.

“So summarizing that all, it would be the confidence of the group. Understanding pre-snap what we’re going to probably get post-snap and be able to execute once that ball is snapped.”

Moore and Campbell can now focus on filling out the offensive staff with at least one spot to be filled on that side of the ball. Keep it locked here for more on the Michigan staff changes heading into a new era of the program.
