Newsstand: Davis Warren speaks on how he stayed ready for starting gig
The Michigan Wolverines turned to Davis Warren at quarterback on Saturday night in the 24-17 win over the Michigan State Spartans and got a clean game out of him in tandem with Alex Orji.
Warren started the game and went 13-for-19 for 123 yards and a touchdown despite not seeing the field since Week 3 when he was benched against Arkansas State. Despite that, he said he always stayed ready for his opportunity.
“It wasn’t a huge adjustment for me,” Warren said after the game. “I feel like I always stayed prepared. That’s something Coach Campbell talked about even after Arkansas State, like this team’s gonna need you at some point again, and you gotta stay ready. That was just something that I took: It’s not my job to have the perspective on if getting benched is the best thing that ever happened to me, the worst thing, if it was a learning opportunity, if it was something that I’ll always regret. It was just my job to stay ready.”
Warren did not know if he would ever get his chance again, so he soaked it up against Michigan State.

“I think that’s natural,” Warren said. “When things don’t go exactly how you want them to, it’s human nature to think that way. But I think, Coach Campbell did a great job keeping me up, and I just turned and was like, ‘Hey, I’m not playing. I might as well turn back into the best practice player I can be again.’ I think I had some of my best weeks of practice even when I wasn’t in there as the starter. And just staying ready, and just the way it turned out, I’m just grateful.”
Michigan is back in action next week at home against No. 1 Oregon at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.

Michigan quote of the day
“Well, I can’t really say exactly what I said. It was really just the message that we’re not operating to the standard that we needed to. You know, especially through the offensive line, the precedent we set wearing that helmet, wearing that uniform, there’s a standard, and I didn’t feel like we were upholding that standard. So, just challenge them. Challenge them to do that. At the highest level, you’re in the biggest game of the year right now, so it was our job to uphold the standard, and it starts up front. So, that was the message to them, and they responded.“
