Thousands of Michigan gathered in Ann Arbor and took to the streets to celebrate the 34-13 national championship win over Washington, the first since 1997 and the first outright title since 1948.

The Wolverine was onsite in S. University Ave. to capture the blowout that commenced late in the fourth quarter. Watch the video above.

Celebration Observations

Fans ran from different corners to the celebration area immediately after Mike Sainristil intercepted Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and returned it 81 yards down to the Michigan eight-yard line. The popular bars and restaurants had the national championship on TV, so fans gathered outside to watch the final seconds tick down before erupting in cheers.

Fireworks ignited the sky on the east side of the street, which caused fans to stop in their tracks and look on in awe. The light show hovered over the buildings and was loud enough for the noise to travel for miles. Most of the crowd were students, but alumni, Ann Arbor natives and fans from all over the state of Michigan came together to commemorate the historic victory.

News cameras and photographers captured the fans harmoniously chanting “It’s Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine,” sing “Sweet Caroline,” and belt out the fight song. Despite the low temperatures, seas of maize and blue cluttered the road, with no one caring about the cold, instead soaking in the first College Football Playoff win for U-M.

Celebrations lasted well into the morning hours on S. University Avenue before the crowd dispersed. In the distance, faint screams, claps, cars honking, and “Go Blue” could still be heard throughout campus. It was a small representation of the reaction of the Michigan fanbase worldwide, but feelings undoubtedly were the same, as the Wolverines are national champions for the first time in 26 years.
