Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart won't return to U-M in 2024
Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart has been a huge part of U-M’s resurgence the last few years, but the won’t return to the staff under head coach Sherrone Moore, according to sources. The Detroit News reported his departure Friday afternoon. Hart’s contract expired after three years, and though there were no details, he hasn’t been on the road recruiting or in the building.
Sources said Hart cleaned out his office recently and was spotted at Schembechler Hall. There are no details on the former Michigan running back’s next move.
Hart returned to Michigan after coaching at Indiana, where he served as running backs coach and associate head coach. He decided to return to U-M after several years with the Hoosiers, where he was a 2018 Broyles Award nominee and received recognition as a Top 25 recruiter by one network for his work on the 2019 signing class.
The former Michigan standout was asked about the future in January, at which point he talked about the uncertainty around Jim Harbaugh’s future.

“You get the questions, and you answer them in the way … I don’t know where anybody is going to be next year,” Hart said. “I don’t know where anybody is going to be tomorrow. I don’t know where I’m going to be. I’ve changed jobs a lot, too, in my career.
“I think you’re just up front and honest with them, and like I always tell them, we don’t know what’s going to happen. There’s a lot of stuff out there. There are a lot of rumors. There’s some stuff that’s true, some stuff that’s false. I just go day by day and we’ll figure it out.”
He also said the program would go on. Now, it will proceed without him.
“The kids that come here love Michigan,” Hart said. “We always said since I was here, Michigan has never been run by one man, not one coach, not one player. Michigan always finds a way to have success. So, I think that no matter what happens, what the future holds, we’ll be just fine.”
