Michigan handled UNLV, 35-7, going deep into the bench in the fourth quarter. J.J. McCarthy put up huge numbers again — 22 of 25, 278 yards, two touchdowns, adding 38 yards rushing on 3 carries — but backup Jack Tuttle was hurt on his first carry. Meanwhile, sophomore cornerback Will Johnson played a bit in the second quarter but only a few plays but wasn’t seen again, while starting safeties Rod Moore and Makari Paige missed the game.

Paige was listed at “out” and Johnson and Moore “questionable” on the required pregame injury report. Safeties and special teams coach Jay Harbaugh, filling in with running backs coach Mike Hart for suspended coach Jim Harbaugh, put Michigan fans at ease with his postgame report.

“Will’s fine,” he said of Johnson, who was replaced by Keshaun Harris and Josh Wallace, among others. “Rod and Makari, they’re coming along. They’ve been practicing, and I think we should have a good shot of them being available for this next game.

“Them being out is just a blessing for some of the other guys just to get some live action, maybe even before they’re fully ready. So, you just get better so much faster when you do get in the games and you’re able to coach up those live reps. I’ve really been pretty pleased with them, but still a ton of stuff to clean up.”

Michigan sophomore Keon Sabb and veteran Quinten Johnson played plenty in their place. Sabb notched one tackle, Johnson none. Caden Kolesar, who missed last year with a knee injury, played quite a bit late and registered a tackle and a pass break-up. We’ll see how much the starters play next week against Bowling Green, but the coaches will likely err on the side of caution while getting them some work for the Big Ten season. Michigan will host Rutgers in week 4.

Tuttle appeared to hurt his shoulder when he was pushed out of bounds into the bench after a 14-yard run on a quarterback read option keeper. He was down for a while but walked back to the bench on his own power. Hart said he could have returned.

“He’s good. He got hit out of bounds late over there,” Hart said of the Michigan backup. “He came out of the tent, and he was throwing. He wanted to go back in, but we weren’t putting him back in. No reason. Just not worth it, right?

“At the end of the day, the health of the kid is best. If the kid gets knocked out over there, you don’t know what’s up. But as far as medically, he’s good to go. He wanted to go back in the game.”

Michigan junior Davis Warren struggled for the second straight week after replacing him, throwing an interception and going 0-for-2 passing.
