ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Wolverines are about to head into the third week of fall camp under head coach Sherrone Moore, his first at the program’s helm. It is an all-hands-on-deck effort in getting the team ready for the regular season, and a few young players have turned heads early on.

Speaking with the media on Tuesday afternoon, Moore named some of the top freshman standouts from Michigan’s fall camp so far, headlined by the work he has seen put in from quarterback Jadyn Davis and his former high school teammate Channing Goodwin at wide receiver.

“There’s a couple of [freshman standouts],” Moore said on Tuesday. I mean, starting with the quarterback position, Jadyn Davis, he just has the ‘it’ factor. He makes plays. Competitive, obviously, was a three-time state champion, player of the year, but poised and has ability. We’ll see how it progresses.

“His teammate, Channing Goodwin, he’s a playmaker. He’s a dude that’s probably going to help us this year in some way, shape, or form, and I’ve always said that it’s easier to play the farther you are from the ball, especially early. If you’re a lineman, D-lineman, it’s harder to play early. So those guys up front, those linemen, especially O-linemen, it’s harder for them to play early, and they’re all going to be really good players.

“But those two, from a skill set standpoint, I think offensively will be the guys. And then the tight ends have been awesome. [Running back] Jordan Marshall is probably the next guy. He’s got a chance to be special and dynamic.”

Marshall has drawn comparisons to former Michigan star Blake Corum, but could he find a way to crack the rotation as early as this season? Snaps are up for grabs behind Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings, and Moore thinks the freshman could be in the mix.

“We’ll see,” Moore said. “Having guys like Jordan Marshall in the room will make you play fast and physical. And Ben Hall has played all of the 230 pounds he is, so he’s run physically and fast. So super excited how he’s hitting and how he’s gaining momentum.”

Michigan’s defense is expected to lead the way for the team with a ton of established players, but a pair of freshmen are making strides there, too.

“[EDGE] Dominic Nichols is probably the guy that jumps out the most… he’s a guy that I think as a freshman has got a chance,” Moore said. “And then probably one more guy is [linebacker] Cole Sullivan.”

Time will tell how the true freshmen work into the mix, but the players Moore named are among the first to keep an eye on in the season opener in a few weeks. Michigan welcomes Fresno State on Aug. 31 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on NBC.
