Michigan signee Trey McKenney shines at the Nike Hoop Summit

Michigan basketball struggled with shooting down the stretch this year, but help appears to be on the way with Trey McKenney and Winters Grady. The two U-M signees are both outstanding shooters, McKenney proving it again on the big stage with 22 points in Team USA’s 124-114 OT win over Team World at the weekend’s Nike Hoop Summit.
McKenney went 7-for-9 from the floor and made two corner triples in the extra session to help Team USA pull away. He made four of his six three-pointers, four of five free throws, and added an assist in the win.
McKenney, a McDonald’s All-American, also earned Mr. Basketball honors for the state of Michigan after averaging 22.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists for Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s. The Flint, Mich., native also earned Michigan Associated Press (AP) Division 1 Player of the Year twice (2023 and 2024) and Michigan’s Gatorade Player of the Year (2024).

In addition to helping the Eaglets win three Catholic League championships, McKenney led St. Mary’s to the 2024 MHSSA Division 1 state championship, finishing with 32 points and 10 rebounds in the title game. He also helped lead Team USA to the 2024 FIBA Men’s U18 AmeriCup in Argentina, starting all six games and averaging the second-most points on the team (10.8 ppg) to go with 5.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals in 18.8 minutes.
“This is definitely at the top of the top,” McKenney told the Detroit News after capturing the Mr. Basketball award. “I’ve been thinking about this since I was a little kid. So, it’s just a blessing to be able to do this and represent the state of Michigan. Putting on for my community and my state is a big thing, and I take pride in being from Michigan and being from Flint and going to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and going to University of Michigan in the summer. I take pride in being where I’m from.”
“I’ve just stayed in Michigan and tried to create a legacy, and that’s what I’m doing.”
He’ll get the chance to continue that at Michigan next season.
