Michigan’s 2022 basketball recruiting class is a Top 3 class in the Big Ten, and one of the best classes in the country. The class has nice balance from top to bottom, addressing needs and depth at multiple positions. Specifically, the backcourt is losing both starters from a Sweet 16 team. The Michigan staff still has Frankie Collins coming back, the freshman point guard who vastly improved throughout the season. At this point, he will be the only returning guard with multiple games playing over 20 minutes. We are still unsure if the staff goes the transfer portal route for another Point Guard, but either way, Michigan needs more backcourt personnel.

Michigan went into the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) and pulled their 3rd recruit from the WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference). Hunter Dickinson came to Michigan from DeMatha, and Terrance Williams came in from Gonzaga. Michigan was able to recruit WCAC’s basketball and football player of the year, Knasir “Dug” McDaniel. The point guard out of Paul VI has had an incredible senior season. McDaniel has had solid improvement over the last three years. In his first years on varsity, he had to play alongside two five star guards who just played in a Final Four for Duke. He had to adjust, and he still flourished. Dug was ready to take over when it was his moment.

Michigan Concept Statistics on the EYBL

In 12 scored games on Synergy Sports from the EYBL Nike Circuit, a few stats from Dug stuck out to me:

Pick and Roll Ballhandler: 33.8% of Dug’s offensive possessions came from the pick and roll. This is ideal for his growth to continually go through his progressions as a ballhandler, seeing his passing and attacking options bode well for his growth. Michigan has a high rate of pick and roll concepts, so this was nice to see.

Pick and Roll Ballhandler: Dug rated 61st percentile for all of EYBL players, but he had one of the higher rates of pick and roll actions. He was able to navigate the pick and roll actions seamlessly, attacking with either hand.

Runner/Floater: The in between floater is going to be integral to offensive package. When he gets to the high Division 1 level he’ll need to find ways to be efficient around the basket. He had one of the higher floater rates in the EYBL, where he is also 61st percentile.

Catch and Shoot Situations: Spacing is important for Michigan’s offense. In catch and shoot situations, Dug was 66th percentile in the EYBL.
