Newsstand: Michigan softball falls in Big Ten tournament championship game
Michigan softball just barely missed out on a Big Ten Tournament championship over the weekend. The Wolverines lost on Saturday in an extra-innings bout against No. 2 seed Nebraska by a score of 3-1.
Senior pitcher Alex Storako (23-8) was her usual dominant self in the game, giving up a solo home run in the top of the first and little damage after. She allowed just four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched.
Graduate outfielder Kristina Burkhardt went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and her 20th double of the season to lead Michigan. It was one of just three hits for the Wolverines, who reached base seven times via the walk.
Michigan’s only run of the day came off the bat of junior Audrey LeClair, who ripped a two-out double to left-center that scored freshman Annabelle Widra. Michigan had a shot to walk off a victory in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first two batters of the inning walked before controversy ensued. Nebraska turned a double play, but Michigan said it dodged a tag between first and second on the 4-3 double play. After video review, it was determined there was no camera angle good enough to overturn. A pop-out ended the inning and the Wolverine threat.

Despite the defeat, Storako, Widra and fifth-year senior Taylor Bump were named to the Big Ten’s All-Tournament Team. Next up for Michigan is waiting its NCAA Regional assignment. The selection show is set for 7 p.m. ET Sunday night on ESPN2.

Michigan quote of the day
“As you guys all know, we couldn’t get the call in fast enough once we knew (Jacksonville) didn’t take Aidan. It worked out great; it was perfect. He’s a perfect fit for us. I mean, he really is everything that we’re about and he matches us perfectly and I’ve said this before, but it just so happened to be that he was in the backyard.
“It wasn’t because of that, but that’s icing on the cake there, that he was right down the road. I just feel like it was meant to be. He belongs here and when you’re going to pick guys, particularly that high, they better fit everything that you’re about, and he does that.”
