PASADENA — Michigan football revealed its uniform combination for the Rose Bowl against Alabama with a social media post. The Wolverines will sport maize pants with their blue jerseys and have a special Rose Bowl patch on the shoulders, similar to the ones worn when they won the 1997 national championship and appeared in the Granddaddy of Them All in other years.

The patches are unique, though, in that they say ‘Big Ten champs’ on top of the block ‘M’ and Rose Bowl logo. Beneath the logos, they read ‘Back to back to back,’ referring to Michigan’s three-straight conference titles.

“I love them. Super sweet,” Michigan junior quarterback J.J McCarthy told TheWolverine.com of the patches, noting that he’ll have his patches in his office one day.

The Wolverines will go with white socks and accessories.

Michigan has worn blue jerseys with its traditional maize pants on three different occasions this season — in home wins over East Carolina, UNLV, Rutgers. The Wolverines wore blue bottoms in four of seven home games this season.

McCarthy said he’s soaking in the experience at the Rose Bowl.

“Tremendous honor, all the history behind it,” McCarthy said. “Such a legendary landmark, and to be able to be a part of it in the stage that we’re on, it’s truly amazing.

“Ultimate excitement, jumping out of our shoes. Enjoying every single moment, relishing it, all the experiences the Rose Bowl presented to us. And enjoying ourselves. We only get nine days left with each other, and just being able to appreciate every moment and take in every moment has been the biggest thing.”

McCarthy said Michigan has the “utmost focus” as it prepares for a matchup with Alabama with the winner heading to the national championship game. The Wolverines have been in this spot before but fallen in the semifinals each of the last two seasons.

Asked what the Maize and Blue feel best about going into this game, McCarthy said it’s the entire team.

“Just in every single player and every single coach because the love we have for each other is unique and different,” he said. “That’s going to be one of the things that help us win this ballgame, just doing it for each other and going out there and leaving it all out there.”

Michigan and Alabama kick off at 2 p.m. PT Monday in Pasadena.
