TheWolverine.com’s John Borton and guest Tom Crawford discuss Michigan basketball losing guard Frankie Collins to the transfer portal. Was it worth it to bring in another transfer point guard? Time will tell. Also discussed is the NFL Draft, headlined by Aidan Hutchinson’s selection by the Detroit Lions.

The topic of the day is the transfer of Collins, which caught many by surprise. Michigan brought in a transfer guard capable of starting at the point in Jaelin Llewellyn, but Collins was still expected to be the future. That was addressed to kick off the podcast on Monday.

“This one struck a cord,” Crawford said. “This has been building up with me. I’m open-minded to NIL and the transfer portal. This is literally the wild, wild west. I’m going to sound like a grumpy old man, stay off my lawn kinda guy. This epitomizes that generation. They are not all that way. I’ve talked to a lot of human resource people in business and others. Kids are just, ‘what can you do for me right now?’ That epitomizes Frankie Collins. He wanted assurance. It’s almost like you can read the body language. This once disturbs me.

“Juwan Howard has got to be thinking if the Jaelin Llewellyn thing is worth it if it is going to push out Frankie? I saw that knowing that it is better you find out know about character and integrity and a commitment to compete. He didn’t want to compete for a position. He wanted to be assured of a position. So bye-bye.”

Collins averaged 2.8 points per game at Michigan this past season, playing the primary backup role to point guard DeVante’ Jones. His offense came and went throughout the season, shooting 42.7% from the floor and 16.7% from three. His stat line also included 1.4 assists and 1.1 turnovers per game.

Collins is the second member of Michigan’s backcourt to transfer in 2022, joining 2020 signee Zeb Jackson. Forward Brandon Johns also transferred this offseason. Johns and Jackson are set to play 2022-23 at VCU.
