Newsstand: Michigan in the mix for No. 1 TE in transfer portal
The Michigan Wolverines have started to heat up during the open NCAA transfer portal and their biggest fish yet might still be on the board in former Purdue tight end Max Klare.
According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, the Wolverines are among the schools in the mix for the top available tight end, along with Louisville, Texas and Texas A&M.
“Per a source, the Purdue transfer is considering Louisville, Michigan, Texas and Texas A&M. Klare was in Ann Arbor on Monday. He’ll be on the Cardinals campus Tuesday,” Wiltfong said early Tuesday morning.
A decision could come soon after the Louisville visit takes place.
Klare, who stands at 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, played all 12 games this season for the 1-11 Boilermakers, recording 51 catches, 685 yards receiving and four touchdowns. All of those marks were team highs amid an abysmal campaign for Purdue, who fired head coach Ryan Walters.

Michigan’s activity in the portal has picked up with three commitments coming on Monday night, bringing the class total to 4 through the first week of the open window. The new players include Indiana wide receiver Donaven McCulley, Cal Poly offensive lineman Brady Norton and Arkansas defensive backs TJ and Tevis Metcalf.

Michigan quote of the day
In addition to those Michigan players listed, there are at least a few other veterans “on the fence” about participating in the Dec. 31 bowl game for various reasons. One who has been around, though (but not participating at 100 percent, of course, following a knee injury last spring) – senior safety and captain Rod Moore. Head coach Sherrone Moore said, “we’ll see” when we asked him after the Ohio State game about a potential return, but we know Champions Circle and others are working on him, too. He is viewed as crucial to next year’s team success.
