The Michigan Wolverines‘ Week 1 opponent, the Fresno State Bulldogs, will have a new head coach to start the season.

Jeff Tedford, who has battled health issues throughout his coaching career, said in a statement on Monday that a recent check-in prompted his decision to step down from his post.

He will be replaced by linebackers coach and assistant head coach Tim Skipper in the interim for the duration of the 2024 season.

“I have a tremendous amount of pride and passion for Fresno State, and I understand the time and energy necessary to lead at a high level,” Tedford said in a statement. “The players, coaches and Bulldog supporters deserve the best. Unfortunately, I am not able to sustain the commitment needed to perform at the level needed to guide the program.

“We are extremely fortunate to have continuity with a great coaching staff. I have full confidence that they will continue to guide our terrific student-athletes to reach their full potential on and off the field.”

Tedford had previously attended Mountain West media days last week and said his health was okay. He skipped the team’s bowl game last December.

Tedford went 45-22 with a pair of conference titles.

Michigan quote of the day

“Defensively, they just don’t have as many pieces this year as they’ve had the last couple years. I also look at the inside linebacker group, are they what they’ve had the last couple years? That I’m not 100% sure. While I love Will Johnson there at corner, he’s elite, there will be a couple of guys that will be stepping in from time to time. There’s a few other guys that I think there are some question marks defensively. They should be rock solid top three, four, five, 10 in the country, no doubt about it.”
