The Michigan Wolverines have lost their first player of the post-spring transfer portal window in senior defensive back Cristian Dixon. Dixon has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

He started his career at wide receiver before making a switch to defensive back ahead of spring practices this year, then switched back. Despite the switch, his name has not come up as a potential contributor in public or private during the first camp under head coach Sherrone Moore at either spot.

Dixon was a four-star recruit in the class of 2021, ranking No. 286 in the nation and No. 42 at wide receiver, in addition to the No. 24 player in the state of California. He appeared in six career games, recording one catch for 7 yards during his freshman season in 2021.

There could be more attrition coming out of the spring, but Michigan still has a few more days of practices before Saturday’s split-squad exhibition at the Big House. The Wolverines could also still add in the portal, something that defensive line coach Lou Esposito said was a possibility on Tuesday.

“I think it just goes into recruiting, he said. “It just opened up today, and it’s like anything else. We have really good players here, so we’re fortunate in that way, but you’re always looking to upgrade the roster. In recruiting in any level — whether it’s a high school kid or a transfer kid — if you feel like he’s going to help you win and there’s room for him, you want to upgrade your roster as much as we can.”

The transfer portal opened on Tuesday and the open window runs through April 30, giving players the opportunity to enter their names and find their next program. Players do not have to have decisions made by then, but can start receiving offers and making visits immediately.

Michigan added a pair of transfers ahead of spring camp in linebacker Jaishawn Barham out of Maryland and offensive lineman Josh Priebe of Northwestern. Last season, the added 9 players via the portal as it fortified the roster for a national title run.
