Newsstand: Michigan coming off hectic day in NCAA transfer portal

Tweets Of The Day
Michigan basketball has already been active with the NCAA transfer portal, adding two players — Illinois forward Morez Johnson Jr. and North Carolina point guard Elliot Cadeau.
Michigan has lost four players — guards Tre Donaldson, Justin Pippen and Jace Howard and forward Sam Walters.
More on Johnson’s commitment from On3’s Thomas Goldkamp:
Johnson was a freshman for the Fighting Illini during the 2024-25 season, and he made a considerable impact. He wasn’t a regular starter but notched eight starts in the 30 appearances he made.
During that time, Morez Johnson averaged 7.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, showing a strong knack for rebounding. He also chipped in 1.1 blocks per game, impacting the game defensively as well.
At 6 foot 9, 225 pounds, Johnson offers an athletic and lengthy presence inside. He will help Michigan replace some anticipated departing talent.
Morez Johnson recorded three double-doubles during the season. He logged double-figure rebounds five times.
Donaldson entering the portal came one day after Michigan added another point guard in Cadeau. More on his departure from The Wolverine’s Chris Balas:
Donaldson started every game for the Wolverines in 2024-25 and averaged 11.3 points, 4.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. He shot 43.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from long range as one of the Wolverines’ top three-point shooters.
Donaldson was a hero in a few Michigan games this year, but none bigger than the Big Ten Tournament semifinal win over Maryland. He took an inbounds pass coast to coast for an 81-80 Wolverines win to set up a championship tilt with Wisconsin, which U-M won to capture a title.
But Donaldson had his ups and downs as Michigan’s starting point guard after playing at Auburn for two years, primarily as a backup. He struggled mightily in both losses to Michigan State, and he played one of his worst games of the year in a loss to his former team in the Sweet 16. He scored 5 points but had no assists and turned it over 4 times in a loss to the Tigers, going 2-for-9 in 30 minutes.

Quote Of The Day
“We had a great time at Michigan. Every time we go back, it just feels more and more like home. It’s great. I really love it. We had a lot of meetings with people that would help with Trav’s chapter there. As soon as we got there, we met with Coach (Sherrone) Moore. But it really wasn’t like a meeting. It was us just sitting there and getting to know more about him, his vision for the program and where Travis fits in. As a mom trying to navigate through all of this, knowing the exact plan for my son means everything. I have to know that. Travis would have the opportunity to work with Bryce Underwood. We got to see him in action at the practice on Saturday. It was amazing. I was like ‘wow, he’s only 17.’ One of the highlights was meeting with Coach Moore. The other was definitely seeing Bryce in action.”
