May discussed the upcoming game against Michigan State, an in-state rivalry battle. The head coach grew up in Big Ten country in southern Indiana and has viewed the rivalry from afar in the years since.
“Every game I watched, it was obvious the amount of intensity and passion for the game,” May said. “And it was typically two really good basketball teams going tooth and nail, competing. Usually, both of them were in championship contention. It seemed like it was always a big, nationally televised game, either during the week or a Saturday or Sunday. And if it was on, I was usually going to try to check it out.”
May was asked what he’s heard from former players and coaches about the Michigan-MSU series.
“I speak frequently to a lot of the former players, and to be honest, it was odd, because I started getting texts about a week ago from players and people were [saying they are] coming in for the MSU game. And I was saying, ‘You know we play OSU first? We’re on the road in Columbus.’
“So, yeah, people are obviously very, very excited. We know what it means, but we also have to focus on us playing really good basketball against a quality team.”

Michigan State pushes the ball — make or miss — and scores a lot in transition. The Wolverines like to do the same, but they’ll have to make sure to contain the Spartan run game on the defensive end.
“Well, hopefully … we don’t do it as well as them,” May noted. “We’ve tried to emphasize running the floor like they do and some other elite teams that do it. So, hopefully, it’s not where we’re going from a ‘D’ to an ‘A.’ We probably do it at a ‘B,’ and they do it at an ‘A.’ So, we’ve gotta give a little bit better with the way we play, and hopefully we prepare.
“But getting great shots on offense and not having that lag time of relaxing because something went well or dropping your head because something went poorly, because the next thing is going to happen very quickly against Michigan State.”
