May opened up with a statement at the start of his press conference, discussing yet another close win for Michigan.

“We’re very fortunate to get out of here with the win tonight, in a very pivotal game,” May said. “We played well in spurts. We’re just having trouble putting a really solid performance together for closer to 40 minutes. But it’s February. If you can find a way to win and learn some lessons, that’s usually the objective.

“But I do think we made enough plays when the game — when they’re these one- and two-possession games, our guys have been able to get some big stops, they’ve made big free throws and came up with some extra possessions.”

Michigan redshirt junior forward Will Tschetter contributed in a big way, scoring all 17 of the team’s bench points, many of them coming in a big first half. May discussed what it’s been like coaching the fourth-year player that was one of only a few holdovers from last year’s roster.

“I had spoken to [former Michigan head] Coach [Juwan] Howard, I had spoken to several people, so I already had … I don’t want to say an opinion of each of these guys, but I had heard some really great things about him. I was excited to coach the human, Will Tschetter, more than the basketball player, from what I had heard from the previous staff and the people here at Michigan.

“Very, very happy for him to have the type of efficient game he had tonight. He’s helped us win so many games this year. I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a better teammate. Maybe some that are as good. But it’s nice to see him rewarded for the work he puts in. His consistency and his approach are great.”

May explained some of the lessons that Michigan will learn from tonight’s game.

“Some of them are internal, as we talk about lineup combinations and minutes and things like that,” May said. “But we just get loose when we have a lead, and it’s been that way all year. The runs — it causes the other team to go on runs.

“And I thought Oregon made some uncharacteristic mistakes tonight, so to be honest. So maybe it was the result of two teams competing at a high level. I thought they played desperate, obviously they traveled and had a tough stretch. I thought they played to win. I thought our guys played with great intensity and effort. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t anywhere we need it to be to win the championships we’re trying to win, but I did think we competed and fought at a championship level tonight.”
