May opened up by crediting Michigan State and expressing his disappointment in the loss. The Wolverines were on a six game winning streak that was snapped, and now they’re a half game back of first place in the Big Ten standings.
“I want to start by giving Michigan State credit,” May said. “I thought in the second half they were able to answer every run. They were the aggressor, and tonight we didn’t look like a championship caliber program. But this group has proven all year that we respond, we unify when things don’t go well. So there’s no reason to expect anything different. Looking forward to moving on to Monday night against a very good Nebraska team, especially in Nebraska.”
Michigan shot 5 of 21 from three point distance. May has long said he believes his team has been due to break out from long range, but the Wolverines couldn’t buy many from deep in this one.

“We really haven’t shot it well in probably three or four weeks,” May said. “We liked some of them. Some of them were rushed. Some of them were out of rhythm. I just don’t think we ever really generated any good offensive rhythm for 40 minutes. We were able to get Vlad established down low. I thought he made some strong plays. But we just didn’t move the ball with the crispness, and we didn’t cut with the same level of pace that we typically do.
“We just didn’t play the way we needed to, to find a way to win this game in this environment with what’s at stake.”
May was asked if he’s looking for particular Michigan players to hit more threes.
“No, it’s more the timing,” May replied. “Obviously, [junior guard] Tre Donaldson is a 40-plus percent three-point shooter on the year. I mean, we want him to shoot them. Danny Wolf is a good percentage three point shooter. I have no problems with him shooting threes. And even [Junior guard] Roddy [Gayle Jr.] and graduate guard] Rubin [Jones], as long as they’re inside-out threes, they’re gonna have to take them, just like their low-percentage shooters did tonight when they were open.”
