Michigan basketball is disappointed it’s not in the NCAA Tournament, but it accepted an NIT bid and won its first round game over Toledo, 90-80, Tuesday night at Crisler Center. Sophomore guard Kobe Bufkin called it a “culture win.”

“It’s more of a culture win,” Bufkin explained. “Coach Juwan kind of reiterated that a couple of times. Obviously, our season didn’t go as planned, but being able to come back out and being able to get a good win over a good team is good.

“Just being able to bounce back. We could’ve sat here and sulked our heads and basically gave the game away and moved on to the next year or next season or what have you, but we were able to come out, come out strong and have a good win.”

Michigan head coach Juwan Howard explained why his team accepted an NIT bid, when others, like North Carolina, declined.

“We’re not going to cry over spilled milk,” Howard said. “We’re not going to act like we’re entitled. We’re not going to like it’s beneath us.

“Our season has been a season built on adversity [and] unfortunately, injuries. We have a young team that’s growing in so many areas. And we got chosen for the NIT. We respect the opportunity. We appreciate it, and we’re gonna go out there and play because this is not only going to help grow us out there on the court, but this is great life lessons that we can gain from this and we can also grow from this.”

“We brought the basketball. The other two teams didn’t have their basketball. We brought the basketball and so it’s time to play. So what are we gonna do? We’re gonna take our basketball and go home because they didn’t pick us to play in the first game? Because the other two teams were allowed to play?”

Michigan takes on Vanderbilt in Nashville this weekend.

Michigan has entered the mix for four-star Georgia quarterback commit Ryan Puglisi.
