Michigan Wolverines basketball is set to lose a former four-star, top-100 recruit, with sophomore guard Zeb Jackson expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Jackson made the announcement via a post on his Instagram account.

“I want to start off by thanking the University of Michigan for allowing me to represent the university for the past two years,” Jackson wrote. “I really appreciate all of my coaches, teammates, mentors and professors for taking care of me during my time here. I would also like to thank everyone who’s been checking on me and sending prayers my way!

“After the time I have taken away, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal because I feel that’s what’s best for my future and my health! Again, thank you to everyone who supports me and my decision. I wish the best for my family here!”

Jackson has not been with the team for several weeks due to a “personal issue,” having missed the team’s last six contests. He missed time during the preseason and early in the 2021-22 campaign with an illness. He’s played in just four outings this year, totaling 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, six rebounds and two assists.

Jackson committed to and signed with Michigan while the legendary John Beilein, the program’s all-time winningest coach, was the head man. He stuck with the Maize and Blue during the coaching transition and played one and a half season for third-year head coach Juwan Howard. The Toledo native also played a limited role as a freshman, seeing action in 16 games and tallying 16 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in 85 minutes.

Even when healthy, Jackson was backing up freshmen guards Frankie Collins and Kobe Bufkin, both four-star prospects in Michigan’s consensus top-five 2022 recruiting class.

The Maize and Blue now have seven scholarship guards on the roster, but two — fifth-year seniors Eli Brooks and DeVante’ Jones and senior Adrien Nunez — are expected to depart the program following this season (Brooks and Jones will be out of eligibility, while Nunez could be asked back for a fifth season).

Michigan is bringing in four-star point guard Dug McDaniel, the No. 83 overall 2022 recruit on the On3 Consensus and four-star wing Jett Howard, who ranks No. 33, in its signing class, with the ability to add more backcourt depth during the late signing period or from the transfer portal.
