Michigan Wolverines basketball has been in contact with Toledo guard transfer Sam Lewis, according to Sam Kayser of 24/7 High School Hoops. Other schools that have shown interest include Iowa State, Illinois, Texas A&M, Arizona State, DePaul, Butler, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, LSU, Seton Hall, Washington, St. Louis, Grand Canyon and George Washington. He’s also received overtures from Toledo to return to his current school.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pounder just wrapped up his sophomore season at Toledo and has two years of eligibility remaining. The Chicago native is not ranked in the transfer portal.

Michigan is both preparing to face Auburn in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 Friday night in Atlanta but also looking to build next year’s roster through the NCAA transfer portal. Head coach Dusty May said part of his staff has been going back and forth between game prep and portal recruiting.

The second-team All-MAC performer started all 33 contests for the 18-15 Rockets in 2024-25. He averaged 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 31.4 minutes per game. Lewis connected on 47.4 percent of his two-point shots and a whopping 44.3 percent of his 131 three-point attempts. He shot 76.7 percent from the free throw line, attempting 120 foul shots. Lewis exploded for 20-plus points in nine different outings.

Lewis got to the rim for 3.3 attempts per game but made only 54.8 percent of those looks, ranking in the 35th percentile in the nation. His jump shot stands out, though. In addition to the three-point figure above, he made 43.2 percent of his 3 mid-range jumpers per game last season.

Toledo head coach Tod Kowalczyk praised Lewis earlier this season.

“He’s a talented player,” Kowalczyk said, per The Toledo Blade. “He’s got great positional size for a 2 guard. He’s all of 6-foot-5, maybe 6-6. He’s got good length. He defends. He plays hard. When he’s engaged mentally, he’s an all-league caliber player.”

Kowalczyk credited Lewis heading home to Chicago last summer and training for some of his breakout.

“He’s playing confident,” Kowalczyk said. “He went home, and some guys go home and work out. He really worked out and trained and played against good competition in Chicago, and he came back this fall even better. I’ve been happy with him.”

Lewis’ sophomore campaign marked a breakout year. As a freshman in 2023-24, he registered 3.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 11.8 minutes per game, appearing in 31 contests with one start.

A Chicago Simeon product, Lewis was an unranked recruit in 2023.
