Jaelin Llewellyn keeping spirits high despite devastating injury
The Michigan guard went down with what appeared to be a non-contact left knee injury during the Maize and Blue’s 73-69 loss to Kentucky in London. He found out he’d be out for the season once the team returned back to the United States, and while he’s in a challenging situation, his spirits have remained high.
“I’m doing well,” Llewellyn said. “Just taking every day as it is, and trying to get some strength going in my quads before surgery, and going to practices and being as supportive as I can.
“[The last 10 or so days have] been alright — not too good, not too bad. Just trying to get through the beginning stages. My teammates have been great supporters for me, and a lot of people have reached out and wished me well. It’s just the beginning of it, but I’m hopeful to keep working throughout this rehab process.”
After a beginning his collegiate career at Princeton, Llewellyn joined the Wolverines as a graduate transfer this season. He could apply for a waiver to receive an extra season of eligibility.
Starting all eight games this season, he was averaging seven points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He has started all 84 games in his career, scoring 1,120 points with 316 rebounds and 212 assists.
Llewellyn didn’t say whether or not he’d return to Michigan or college basketball in 2023-24, saying he wants to take “every day by day” and not focus too much beyond the long recovery he has in front of him.
