ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan Wolverines basketball scored a 12-point victory over Michigan State Saturday night at Crisler Center, winning 84-72. Head coach Juwan Howard, freshman guard Dug McDaniel, sophomore guard Kobe Bufkin and freshman forward Tarris Reed Jr. met with the media postgame to discuss the team’s 15th win on the season.

McDaniel came out of the gates hot, scoring the team’s first 7 points, and finished with a game high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field with 4 assists and 4 rebounds.

“From start to finish — and I’ll start with the beginning of the game — Dug, with his energy on the defensive end, and then offensively, he made some tough shots,” Howard said. “But he also allowed the game to come to him. He set the tone, the way he did it, and the guys really rallied behind Dug.

“And then you got a lot of energy from our bench, from guys like Tarris Reed Jr. as well as [graduate guard] Joey Baker and [junior guard] Jace Howard. Those guys were really dialed in to competing.”

Michigan also out-rebounded MSU, 38-25, after getting beaten badly on the glass Tuesday at Wisconsin. Howard was pleased with the way his group performed in that area, after it was a big focus coming in.

“It’s been a point of emphasis about how we gave up 14 offensive rebounds to Wisconsin, and that should never happen,” Howard said. “Nothing against Wisconsin. Not saying Wisconsin isn’t capable, because they showed that, but it was based on, they wanted it more than we did, even though defensively we worked so hard on the defensive end and them shooting 33 percent from the field and still giving them 14 extra possessions. It’s tough to win ball games like that on the road.

“Tonight, we made a conscious effort of being the toughest, nastiest, the grittiest — by going to the glass, by attacking the paint, by getting fouls and getting to the foul line.

“We were so locked in these last couple days. You’re going to get results like that [if you do that].
