Michigan Wolverines basketball hasn’t honored a jersey number since 2006, but that could change soon. Guard Trey Burke, the 2013 national player of the year, revealed on a recent podcast appearance that Michigan is considering putting his number — 3 — in the rafters.

“I was told not to say anything, but yes. I’m sure they aren’t going to be upset when they see … I’m glad you asked it, because I wasn’t gonna say anything,” Burke said on the Politely RAW podcast when asked if he’s had communication with Michigan about his jersey being honored.

“I have heard that it will happen. It will happen. Bucket list for me.

“I appreciate everything that university … I appreciate them, they appreciate everything they did for me and my family as well, though.

Michigan has five jerseys up in the rafters, one “retired” and four others “honored.” Cazzie Russell’s No. 33 is retired and can’t be worn by Michigan players, and his banner is joined in the rafters by No. 22 Bill Buntin, No. 35 Phil Hubbard, No. 41 Glen Rice and No. 45 Rudy Tomjanovich.

“That’s some great company to be in. I was super excited to hear that, for sure.”

When Burke returned to Michigan for the 10-year reunion of the 2013 team that made the national championship game, he discussed the possibility of being honored.

“That would mean the world. It would mean the world, honestly.

“That’s something you dream about as a kid. Growing up, I loved college basketball, I watched college basketball. I was one of those kids that was running around with a little rubber basketball, dreaming of making big shots. Just to have something to leave your legacy on something like that at such a great university like Michigan, that would be great for me. I would love that.”

Burke was the consensus national player of the year in 2013, winning the Wooden, Naismith AP and Oscar Robertson awards. He was a consensus first-team All-American and named the Big Ten Player of the Year.

Burke appeared in 73 games with 72 starts over his two-year career at Michigan, averaging 16.9 points and 5.7 assists per outing. He declared for the 2013 NBA Draft and picked No. 9 overall by the Utah Jazz.

Burke played in the NBA until 2022, seeing time with the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers. He’s currently a member of the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association.
