Michigan Wolverines basketball has made contact with Monmouth guard transfer Abdi Bashir Jr., according to Sam Kayser of 24/7 High School Hoops. Other schools who have connected with Bashir include Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Providence, UCLA, USC, Virginia, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, NC State, Arizona State and Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-7, 160-pound shooting guard just wrapped up his sophomore season at Monmouth and has two years of eligibility remaining. He isn’t currently ranked by On3’s transfer portal rankings. He also entered the 2025 NBA Draft, testing the waters.

Bashir averaged 20.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 33.2 minutes per game in 2024-25, playing for the 13-20 Hawks, coached by King Rice.

Bashir shot 37 percent on twos (95-of-257), 38.3 percent on threes (127-of-332) and 86.8 percent on free throws (92-of-106).

The Omaha, Neb., native is one of the highest-usage players in the country, using 31.7 percent of possessions (26th nationally) and taking 37.6 percent of his team’s shots when he’s on the floor (third). He scored 20-plus points in 14 of 33 outings.

Bashir is ineffective at the rim (45.2 percent) and on other in-the-paint twos (27.6 percent) but is a prolific jump shooter. He made 37.2 percent of his 4.2 mid-range jumpers per game in addition to the above three-point numbers. Perhaps most telling of how good of a shooter he is: the three-point volume. Bashir ranked second in the nation with 332 three-point field goal attempts and first with 127 made triples.

The Monmouth standout earned first-team All-CAA honors this past season, the only player on his team to earn any conference awards.

Bahir was relatively productive but much less involved in the offense as a freshman in 2023-24. He averaged 6.3 points per game, shooting 35.7 percent from inside the arc (25-of-70) and 39.1 percent from three-point distance (51-of-130).

While his jump shot stands out, his overall offensive efficiency is low, with a 99.9 offensive rating in 2024-25 and 95.9 rating in 2023-24.

Bashir is from Omaha, Neb., but attended high school at PHHoenix Prep in Arizona.

Bashir released a statement to ESPN after deciding to move on from Monmouth:

“My time at Monmouth has been incredible, and I deeply appreciate the support from my coaches, teammates, and fans,” Bashir wrote. “After careful consideration, I’ve decided to test the NBA waters while exploring transfer opportunities to find the best fit for my development and career.”
