Boynton discussed the challenge that awaits Michigan at Purdue, which is coached by longtime head man Matt Painter. The Boilermakers are coming off a national championship game appearance last season.

“Purdue — obviously, they’ve been the standard in the league for the last several years, so we have the utmost respect for their program. Obviously, Coach Painter has done a great job for almost two decades now — I would think, coming close to it.

“So, we know we’re gonna be going into a really hostile environment, against a really well coached team. Coming off a loss, they’ll be really highly motivated, obviously trying to stay at the top of the league. We’re gonna have to play some really good basketball to give ourselves a chance.”

Purdue had won 26 straight home games before falling to Ohio State Tuesday, so Michigan is playing a good team motivated by a loss.

“You try to think about the mindset of the opponent when you’re preparing for them,” Boynton acknowledged. “Obviously, you can always spin it either way. Sometimes, a team can get too comfortable if they’re winning, but certainly teams don’t want to lose consecutive games at home. Having been through enough college basketball seasons, you gotta expect to get their best shot.

“I don’t know how much of a factor their travel played in their last game. Illinois lost to USC after coming back from the West Coast. Obviously, we came back from the West Coast and didn’t play our best basketball the first couple games back.

“Just understanding what their mindset is certainly goes to how we try to prepare our team.”

Michigan and Purdue will tip off at 8 p.m. ET Friday night on FOX. The Wolverines are coming off a win over Northwestern that served as a bounce back from a loss to Minnesota on the road. The Wolverines are 6-1 in Big Ten play.
