Sayfie and Balas gave their thoughts on Michigan vs. MSU ahead of Friday night’s high stakes game.

“This is the eighth top 15 matchup between the two teams since the turn of the century,” Sayfie said. “A lot on the line. First place in the Big Ten — you remain there for Michigan with a win. You get there with a half game lead if you’re Michigan State and come in and get a victory.”

“It’s gonna be a tough one,” Balas said. “I think Michigan State’s playing good ball. It’s funny, because after they lost to Indiana at home and everybody looks at the next five games [and says], ‘Well, they might not win another one.’ I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen that over the years, where then all of the sudden Michigan State pulls out two big wins and they’re back.

“[MSU head man] Tom Izzo is a good basketball coach. We can say whatever we want to about him, but he has a way of motivating his team. And the pride in the program that, OK, he knows which buttons to push to get these guys back on track.

“This team is better as a sum of its parts than the individuals, and those are usually teams that perform really well under Tom Izzo. They’ve all bought into what he’s preaching. They’ve got some good, young pieces. I’m still not sure how they match up with U-M. That’s going to be the interesting part.”
