Amid seven-game win streak, Michigan basketball ranked in AP poll for first time since 2022
Michigan Wolverines basketball entered the 2024-25 season unranked in both major polls but is now inside the top 25 by the Associated Press and the coaches after one month. The Maize and Blue check in No. 14 in the AP and No. 14 in the coaches polls amidst a seven-game win streak that is the 10th-longest in the nation.
Michigan is 8-1 and ranked in the AP poll for the first time since Nov. 14, 2022, when the Wolverines started 2-0 under head coach Juwan Howard. They fell out of the rankings that next week following an 87-62 loss to Arizona State in Las Vegas and haven’t appeared in the poll since.
The Wolverines haven’t been ranked in the top 15 in the AP since checking in No. 4 in the Nov. 15, 2021 release.
The seven-game winning streak for first-year head coach Dusty May‘s crew is Michigan’s longest since a stretch of the exact same length from January to February of the 2020-21 campaign. During the current streak, Michigan beat two-straight ranked opponents in Xavier (No. 22 at the time) and Wisconsin (No. 11), marking their first occurrence of back-to-back victories over top-25 foes since the 2022 NCAA Tournament (No. 24 Colorado State, No. 5 Tennessee).
Xavier is currently unranked, while Wisconsin slots No. 20 in the AP poll.
Michigan has five AP ranked opponents still on the schedule — No. 11 Purdue (Jan. 24, Feb. 11), No. 12 Oregon (Feb. 5), No. 13 Oklahoma (Dec. 18) No. 21 Michigan State (Feb. 21, March 9) and No. 24 UCLA (Jan. 7).

The Wolverines are headed to New York City for a Tuesday night matchup against Arkansas in the Jimmy V Classic. Michigan has won 11 straight games at Madison Square Garden, the host of the event, and has a 26-11 record at the World’s Most Famous Arena.
Michigan has six transfer newcomers on the roster but has been able to mesh quickly. The Wolverines rank 21st in the country on Kenpom and check in 43rd on offense and 10th on defense in the site’s adjusted efficiency metrics. May is pleased with the way his group has come together in the early going.
“I don’t know if we’re ranked or not ranked … all the stuff doesn’t matter to me,” May said following Michigan’s 85-83 win over Iowa Saturday afternoon at Crisler Center. “It does change the complexion of what we think about and things like that. But yeah, overall, I like where we’re at.”
