Michigan basketball schedules series with Wake Forest featuring two neutral-site games

Michigan Wolverines basketball has added to its non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 season, its first year under head coach Dusty May. According to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein, the Maize and Blue will take on Wake Forest in a neutral site game in Greensboro, N.C., this coming season, with a return matchup to be played in Detroit in 2025-26.
Per MLive, which spoke with a Wake Forest spokesman, the 2024-25 game in Greensboro will be played in November, but the exact date has not yet been revealed. Rothstein noted that an official announcement will be coming soon.
Wake Forest resides in Winston-Salem, which is located less than 30 miles from Greensboro. Michigan’s campus is just over 40 miles from downtown Detroit.
Michigan has another game in North Carolina scheduled for 2024-25, versus Oklahoma in the third annual Jumpman Invitational Dec. 18 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Michigan will also take on Miami (Ohio) in Ann Arbor and Arkansas at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, N.Y., Dec. 11. The Maize and Blue will participate in the Fort Myers tip off Nov. 25-27, along with South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Xavier, as well.
Michigan and Wake Forest have faced off just one time in history, with the Demon Decons winning 71-60 Nov. 28, 2000 at Crisler Center.
In its fourth season under head coach Steve Forbes, Wake Forest finished with a 21-14 overall record, missing the NCAA Tournament after losing to Pittsburgh in its second game of the ACC Tournament. The Demon Deacons competed in the NIT, beating Appalachian State (87-76) before falling to Georgia (72-66). Wake Forest hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2017, when it earned a No. 11 seed and lost to Kansas State in the First Four.

Wake Forest checks in No. 45 in T-Rank’s 2024-25 preseason projections. The site predicts that the Demon Deacons will finish with a 20-11 record. The team will be led by senior guard Hunter Sallis, a former Michigan recruit who stands 6-foot-5, 185 pounds and earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2023-24.
Michigan hasn’t made the Big Dance since 2022, missing it the last two seasons, but it will have a completely different look this coming season. The Wolverines brought in nine new players, including six transfers, and May and his staff have received high marks for their offseason moves.
On a podcast appearance with Rothstein in April, Michigan’s head coach provided some insight into his philosophy surrounding scheduling.
“We want to play an extremely competitive schedule and put the Michigan brand on the biggest stage as frequently as possible, and also putting together a schedule that will allow us to get a high seed in the NCAA Tournament,” May said. “I will say this, because of the way college scheduling works, I’m much less stressed about putting together a quality schedule here than I was the last several years [at Florida Atlantic].”
