Where Michigan basketball stands in AP top 25 following 1-1 week
Michigan Wolverines basketball has slid one spot from No. 20 to No. 21 in the Associated Press poll. The Maize and Blue are No. 20 in the coaches poll, after checking in No. 19 last week.
First-year head coach Dusty May‘s team is 14-4 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten, third in the conference standings behind only Michigan State (7-0) and Purdue (7-1).
Michigan went 1-1 last week, falling at Minnesota (84-81 in overtime) and beating Northwestern (80-76 in overtime). The Golden Gophers were winless in the Big Ten before beating Michigan. Northwestern, meanwhile, fell to 2-5 in conference play with the setback at Crisler Center.
Michigan has had the easiest Big Ten schedule in the conference up to this point, according to Kenpom, but it’s about to get much more challenging. The Wolverines will take on Purdue Friday and have a tough February and early March, before the postseason.
Michigan has some time before Friday’s game, and May and Co. intend to use it.
“We’re taking today off; hopefully the guys stay away as much as possible,” May said Monday. “And then tomorrow, get back after it with a real, solid plan for what we’re gonna see and what we need to do.

“This is one of our longer breaks of the season. This is the most prep time we’ll have, so we’ll work on us, we’ll work on Purdue. And at this time of the year, you’re trying to fix problems, because the teams in our league, the coaching in our league is so good that they find some holes in what you do, and now we have to counter that and continue to get better.”
Michigan has beaten one team that’s currently ranked in the AP poll: No. 18 Wisconsin. The Wolverines beat the Badgers 67-64 in Madison, the first of their three road wins.
Michigan has plenty of opportunities to notch ranked wins during the remainder of Big Ten play, with four future opponents that are ranked: No. 8 Michigan State (Feb. 21, March 9), No. 11 Purdue (Jan. 24, Feb. 11), No. 15 Oregon (Feb. 5) and No. 17 Illinois (March 2).
