TheWolverine.com‘s Clayton Sayfie and Anthony Broome discuss key Michigan Wolverines football position battles, basketball’s roster and transfer targets on this week’s episode of the podcast. We also hit in Michigan hockey ahead of the Frozen Four.

Perhaps the most-watched position battle of the spring was at the starting cornerback spot opposite of sophomore Will Johnson. Sophomore Amorion Walker switched over from wide receiver but still has a ways to go, having struggled in the spring game. Junior Ja’Den McBurrows and sophomore Myles Pollard are also in the mix.

“[Back when Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh called Walker a starter on Feb. 23], it felt a little bit like they were trying to get his confidence going and get him bought in on being a corner as opposed to wide receiver. They had glowing things to say about him. Of course, his athleticism is at that point. But I don’t think as a corner he’s quite there yet.

“That [talk about Walker] has motivated some of the other corners — Ja’Den McBurrows, Myles Pollard, both of whom stood out on Saturday [in the Michigan spring game]. [Freshman] Jyaire Hill … they’ve got options here. More options than a lot of people thought, including myself, coming into this offseason.”

“I think they want [Walker] to win it, because if it does click with those athletic traits, then you’re talking about a unicorn, ‘an alien,’ as Ronnie Bell would refer to him as. But Saturday, it wasn’t pretty. You give all the credit in the world to a guy like Peyton O’Leary. That was the matchup that the Maize team exploited. … It was rough at times. I just think a lot of what they’re asking him to do is come with the confidence, it’s going to come with the play experience.”

Both hosts believe Walker can get there, but it may take more time than some originally projected.
