BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan Wolverines head football coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff were at Ferris State University for the Sound Mind Sound Body Michigan Showcase Thursday, two days into a big month for the program. In addition to hosting recruiting visitors over the summer, the Maize and Blue are attending satellite camps, all as the players go through summer workouts, which begin Friday.

Amidst a busy time of the year, the Michigan staff is also keeping an eye on the transfer portal, a standard procedure for college staffs on a daily basis, year round.

“You don’t say no,” Harbaugh said of the possibility. “Never say never. You never know what’s going to happen. So there could be another addition before the season starts.”

Michigan has added two players via the portal ahead of the 2022 campaign. Former Virginia offensive center Olusegun Oluwatimi joined the program in January and went through spring ball, while Central Florida defensive tackle transfer Cam Goode committed in April and arrived on campus this week.

The Wolverines saw three of their four starting defensive linemen head to the NFL and tried to offset some of the void by using the portal, landing Goode. Harbaugh is optimistic about what the 6-2, 315-pounder — who’s racked up 49 tackles, 11.5 stops for loss and three sacks in his collegiate career — can bring to the table.

“We’ll see [what he can do],” Harbaugh said. “Tomorrow is the first day of the summer cycle, and he’ll have the ability to show what he can do.

“Olu is a great example of somebody who was successful at Virginia and then came to Michigan midyear. He was all about his business. He just went about working on the field and in the weight room. He could’ve easily been a guy that came in and said, ‘I’m a starter, a Rimington finalist, etc., etc., etc.’ None of that. He just went to work, and he’s gained the respect of everybody on the football team — coaches, players, everybody.

“He had the opportunity to do that, and Cam Goode will have the opportunity to do that. We’ll see what happens.”

The Michigan coach was asked to give his ‘take’ on the transfer portal and the increase in players switching schools. He didn’t have a bombshell answer, but reiterated that he continues to be in support of the recently-passed one-time transfer rule that doesn’t penalize a player for changing institutions.

“I don’t know if I really have a take on it,” Harbaugh said. “There are probably some numbers that show there are more going into it every single year.

“Honestly, I think it’s another thing that’s been — from my perspective, from what I’ve seen — it’s been healthy. Just gave a great example of Olu and some others, so I think it’s been, from my standpoint, which is limited … it’s certainly not the entire universe of the transfer portal. But more often than not, it’s been a healthy, productive thing.”
