Michigan freshman cornerback Will Johnson has graded out as the second-best cornerback in the country in man coverage this season through two regular-season weeks (88.3), according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). Overall in coverage, according to PFF, Johnson has given up four receptions for 47 yards on eight targets.

Michigan’s youngest corner is shining, and so is its oldest. Graduate Gemon Green has gotten off to a strong start in his fifth season with the Wolverines. He’s played 36 coverage snaps and allowed no receptions. The ball has come his way four times, too, but receivers and quarterbacks have still not been able to find success against him.

Michigan has had a few breakout players on the offensive side of the ball, led by quarterback J.J. McCarthy, wide receiver Roman Wilson and running back CJ Stokes. Within two weeks, McCarthy won himself the starting quarterback job. Wilson has scored three touchdowns on four touches, showing he’s taken a big step forward in his game. And Stokes, a summer enrollee, has impressed and become the Wolverines’ third-string running back behind Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. Edwards got banged up last week and may not play this weekend, so Stokes’ role could grow even more against UConn.

Quote Of The Day

“Gio, he’s just been on the up, and up, and up. He came in last year as a freshman really didn’t know much and was really kind of lost. This spring and this training camp, you could see the steps forward. He was always a big, strong kid but it was the playbook and the alertness, the fundamentals and all that. That’s where he’s taken himself to the next level. That’s why there’s so much confidence to play him in these games. He’s done a good job for us.”
