There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

There are officially three more Saturdays without Michigan football, so live it up while basking in the excitement, fans.

With 28 days until the opener against Colorado State, we take a look back at one of Michigan’s 28-0 victories. The Wolverines beat Maryland by that score Oct. 3, 2015, in head coach Jim Harbaugh‘s first season. That came one week after winning against BYU, 31-0, and a game before dismantling Northwestern, 38-0, making U-M’s first stretch of three consecutive shutouts in over three decades.

The last time it occurred before that was Nov. 1-15, 1980 — a stretch that included wins against Indiana (35-0), Wisconsin (24-0) and Purdue (26-0). That was actually the fourth time Michigan had three straight shutouts since 1939 (1971, 1973, 1980 being the others). Another interesting stat we dug up is that Michigan actually had 11 shutouts during each of the 1901, 1903 and 1905 campaigns.

Michigan outscored its opposition, 97-0, over the three-game span, not allowing a point over 41 straight defensive possessions. Michigan outscored its opposition, 157-7, over the last 19 quarters at that point, stretching back to the second stanza against Oregon State (Sept. 12, 2015).
