There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

With four days until Michigan kicks off the 2022 season against Colorado State at The Big House, we discuss U-M’s head coach and former All-American quarterback, Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh had a stellar playing career at Michigan before spending 15 seasons as an NFL quarterback. He redshirted as a freshman and attempted just five passes as a sophomore in 1983. He took over the Michigan starting job in 1984, but was injured in the fifth game of the season against Michigan State, ending his season.

He came back in 1985, throwing for 1,976 yards and 18 touchdowns with six interceptions and a 63.9 completion percentage, before completing 65 percent of his passes for 2,729 yards and 10 touchdowns with 11 picks as a senior. The latter season, he was named first-team All-Big Ten and a Heisman Trophy finalist, finishing third in balloting.

Harbaugh notched several signature victories as Michigan’s quarterback, most notably against the hated Buckeyes. He beat Ohio State as the starter each of the last two seasons. His legendary touchdown throw to John Kolesar in the 27-17 win in 1985 will forever be a top highlight of the rivalry from a U-M standpoint. In the final three regular-season games of that season, Harbaugh completed 41 of 50 passes for 706 yards, nine touchdowns, and no interceptions.

In 1986, Harbaugh issued a guarantee that Michigan would beat Ohio State despite falling to Minnesota the week prior. His proclamation became true with a 24-10 win in Columbus, and U-M advanced to the Rose Bowl, where they lost to Arizona State.

The former Michigan quarterback was a first-round pick to the Chicago Bears and went on to play with that franchise, as well as the Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and San Diego Chargers.

Harbaugh started 140 games and played in 173 during his NFL career. He completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 26,288 yards and 129 touchdowns with 117 interceptions.

He got into coaching after playing, leading the Oakland Raiders quarterbacks room from 2002-04. He then became a head coach for University of San Diego in 2004-06, before moving up to Stanford from 2007-10.

Michigan’s prodigal son came home Dec. 30, 2014 to lead the Maize and Blue after four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. As a pro coach, Harbaugh won 49 games and led the 49ers to three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance.
