There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

We didn’t even think of highlighting anyone but Charles Woodson with two days until the Maize and Blue kick off the 2022 season against Colorado State (Saturday at noon ET on ABC). No. 2 is one of the best players in Michigan history — arguably the top Wolverine of all time — and went on to have a fantastic NFL career.

Woodson was a lockdown cornerback from the start of his Michigan career to the end. He notched five interceptions as a freshman in 1995, including two in a victory over then-second-ranked Ohio State. That foreshadowed what was to come against the Buckeyes. He was tabbed as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

His 15 pass breakups during the 1996 season were a school record at the time. He’s since been passed by four others, including the record-holder, Jourdan Lewis (22 in 2015). He added four picks and began being used a bit on the Michigan offense. He caught 10 passes for 139 yards and one touchdown while also adding a rushing score. Woodson was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press.

Woodson was again named a first-team All-American and became Michigan’s third-ever Heisman Trophy winner, joining Tom Harmon in 1940 and Desmond Howard in 1991. That made him the sport’s first-ever defensive player to win college football’s most prestigious individual award — and no defender has done so since.

He led Michigan to an undefeated, 12-0 season and national championship, which was captured after beating Washington State in the Rose Bowl. His punt return touchdown against Ohio State is one of the top plays in The Big House’s illustrious history. He also added an interception in the end zone and a 37-yard reception that led to Michigan’s lone offensive touchdown of the game in the 20-14 triumph.

All told for his stellar senior season, Woodson intercepted seven passes and caught 11 for 231 yards and two scores. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Woodson was selected to nine Pro Bowls as a member of the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers from 1998-2015 and was named All-Pro during eight seasons. He was the 1998 NFL Rookie of the Year and the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year.
