Michigan Wolverines football junior defensive back Kody Jones has entered the NCAA transfer portal, TheWolverine.com has learned. He made the move one day after Michigan’s season ended with a 19-13 win over Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

The 5-foot-11, 193-pounder played in 15 games as a reserve in three seasons at Michigan. He has two years of eligibility remaining, since he redshirted as a freshman in 2022.

Jones leaves Michigan with a 36-6 record. The Wolverines won two Big Ten championships (2022, 2023) and the 2023 national title.

He was buried on the depth chart for the majority of his career. Jones is a nickel by trade, and also played some safety this season. He logged 30 of his 42 defensive snaps in 2024, never reaching the point where he was in games while they were in doubt.

Jones saw action in nine outings in 2024, but did not appear in the bowl game against the Crimson Tide. He didn’t record any stats this season.

He appeared in three games in 2023 — against ECU, UNLV and Bowling Green, the Wolverines’ non-conference opponents. He made 1 tackle, a solo stop against UNLV. That season, Michigan finished 15-0 and won the national championship for the first time since 1997.

The Memphis (Tenn.) Germantown product was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class. He was ranked as the No. 282 overall player and No. 31 cornerback in the transfer portal.

Jones is Michigan’s 14th scholarship player to enter the transfer portal since it opened earlier this month. U-M players have four more days to request entrance into the portal.

Michigan junior cornerback Will Johnson, who’s now off to the 2025 NFL Draft, identified Jones as someone who stepped up earlier this offseason. However, it didn’t materialize into more playing time.

“I’ve seen a lot of the young guys step up, like DJ WallerJyaire HillJa’Den McBurrowsZeke BerryKody JonesMyles Pollard,” Johnson said in March. “All of those guys have stepped up a lot. They’re taking that step for this next year coming up. So just keep stacking days throughout spring ball and keep getting better every day. They’ll be ready to go.”
