Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter interviews with Philadelphia Eagles
According to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Michigan Wolverines football defensive coordinator Jesse Minter interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles for the same job. Garafolo revealed that Rams defensive backs coach / pass game coordinator Chris Shula also interviewed. Shula worked with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni on the Chargers’ coaching staff from 2015-16.
Per other reports, the Eagles interviewed former Wisconsin interim head coach and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, and they’ve requested an interview with Seahawks associate head coach Sean Desai.
Minter, a 2022 Broyles Award finalist for the nation’s top assistant, is entering his second season with the Maize and Blue. Jonathan Gannon, previously the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, took the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job after Super Bowl LVII.

In 2022, Minter had a base salary of $900,000 and earned $425,000 in bonuses. Last year, the Michigan coordinator agreed to a three-year contract and will receive a $25,000 pay bump in 2023 and 2024.
His father, Rick Minter, a longtime college football coach most known for his time as Cincinnati’s head coach (1994-2003), is an analyst on the Michigan staff.
Minter led a Michigan unit that ranked sixth in total defense, seventh in scoring defense, seventh in rushing defense and 20th in passing defense last season. The Maize and Blue went 13-0, notching 13 victories for the first time in program history and winning the Big Ten championship, before falling to TCU in the College Football Playoff Fiesta Bowl semifinal.
Michigan’s season was highlighted by a 45-23 win over Ohio State, with the Wolverines posting their largest margin of victory over the Buckeyes since a 22-0 shutout in 1976. Eight of the Maize and Blue’s opponents were held to 14 points or less.

Most of Minter’s experience has come at the college level, but outside of his time at Michigan, his most notable job was spending four years as a defensive assistant with the Baltimore Ravens, coaching defensive backs in 2020.
Minter began his career as a defensive intern at Notre Dame in 2006 and was a graduate assistant with Cincinnati from 2007-08. He earned his first full-time on-field coaching job leading linebackers at Indiana State from 2009-10, before being promoted to defensive coordinator (2011-12). He coordinated the Georgia State defense from 2013-16, before moving to the Ravens, where he worked under Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh‘s brother, John Harbaugh. Minter made the move back to college, coordinating Vanderbilt’s defense in 2021, before coming to Ann Arbor.
Michigan lost former defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald during last year’s coaching carousal. He went back to Baltimore to coordinate the Ravens defense. He had worked with the franchise the previous seven years, alongside Minter for part of his stay.
Michigan has seen some movement to the defensive coaching staff this offseason, with Chris Partridge recently being named linebackers coach. He replaces George Helow, who spent two years in Ann Arbor but reportedly mutually parted ways with the program.
