Newsome was asked what he learned in 2024, his first season as Michigan’s offensive line coach after previously leading the tight end group.
“I think you learn a lot,” Newsome replied. “Obviously, it was getting back to the position I played, and kind of my home in a sense. Obviously, love the tight ends, but there’s something different about coaching the offensive line that I love.
“I think you learn a lot about yourself any time you face adversity. It was a challenging year for us, so it forces you to kind of look at, hey, how can I be better so that I can help the guys? Just making sure that I’m doing everything I can possibly do to put the guys in the best position to succeed.
“I obviously wish that we didn’t have to go through that, but I do think that any time you face that, it makes you stronger as a program, stronger as a coach.”

Esposito, meanwhile, was asked about all Michigan has to replace up front on defense, and how he’s planning on replacing that.
“At the end of the day, the biggest thing is that the game always has been and always will be about the players,” Esposito said. “We were fortunate to have two really, really elite, unbelievable players in the D-tackle room, and then you add [EDGE] Josaiah Stewart in there. That front was really, really good.
“The exciting part of it is we have some really good players coming back, and we’ve added some really good players. And then the other thing is some of these young guys that are in the system, that have now been here a year, are starting really, really to get special and be the players that we thought they were going to be.
“I’m excited about it. Every day, they get better. Especially nowadays with football, so many freshman come in early. So with the freshmen, you’re starting to see the biggest jump. We hit practice six, so we’re almost halfway through, and they’re starting to get it, and you’re starting to see those guys playing.”
