Michigan Wolverines football freshman early enrollee quarterback Bryce Underwood has had a strong first spring in Ann Arbor, by all accounts. He’ll make his first impression in a winged helmet in front of fans Saturday at The Big House in the team’s Maize vs. Blue spring game.

The 6-foot-4, 208-pound No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class hasn’t just been praised for his physical attributes since arriving at Michigan, but also his leadership and work ethic.

“He’s been outstanding,” head coach Sherrone Moore said on ‘The Hard Count’ with On3’s J.D. PicKell. “He’s one of those kids that you’ve gotta pull back, you gotta tell him to get some rest, make sure you’re sleeping [with] the recovery piece, because he’s just a worker. He never stops. He wants to be the best. He’ll do anything to be the best.

“He’s a great teammate, a great young man. The foundation that his parents set for him has been awesome. He does everything at an elite level, on and off the field, so just excited for him and for us as the future goes.”

Michigan sophomore Jadyn Davis is also taking reps at quarterback, while Fresno State graduate transfer Mikey Keene has missed the spring with an injury. In all likelihood, the competition for the starting job won’t be decided until August.

“Right now, I think it’s open still,” Moore said of the battle. “I’m excited to see what happens in the spring game, and excited to see how it holds into the summer and fall camp.

“But Jadyn Davis has really taken huge steps this fall camp, and played really more confidently. You can see the glimpses of things that he did in high school really show up in spring ball. Been proud of his progress and what he’s done, and made the competition even better.

“It usually carries into fall camp. All the really good battles that I’ve been a part of, you can say something at spring, but then it changes. We’re gonna take our time with the process of who that person is.

“It’s so important, right? That person is gonna have the ball in their hands every single play and make so many decisions. So for us, it’s probably going to go into fall camp, and then probably the week before the first game, make a decision and make the announcement then.”

A Belleville (Mich.) High product, Underwood came to Michigan after flipping his commitment from LSU, and he hopped onto campus in Ann Arbor with a lot of fan fare. That can be overwhelming, but Underwood is handling it well.

“First, it starts with Bryce, with his foundation of his mom and dad, Jay and Beverly,” Moore said. “They’re created a very humble human being, who’s confident in his abilities but is humble.

“He just wants to work and be the best, and for me it’s been more of the conversations to make sure you keep that all close to the vest, you keep your circle tight, because there are gonna be so many people around you that want to be a part of his circle and be a part of him and do things he does.

“But he just wants to be around his teammates, he loves football and loves his family. That’s it. It’s not super hard to keep him out of all the crazy stuff, because he doesn’t really go out and do all those things. He’s about football, he’s about his teammates and that’s really the long and short of it.

“It’s just keeping him humble. He’ll make plays and be confident, but he’s a humble kid that really just loves his teammates.”
