Michigan Wolverines football lost two starting cornerbacks — DJ Turner and Gemon Green — to the 2023 NFL Draft. Subsequently, the Maize and Blue have seared the NCAA transfer portal for talent to compete for the starting position opposite of sophomore-to-be Will Johnson, who came on late in the season, starting four of the last six games and grabbing 3 interceptions during that span.

The latest top target is former Ole Miss corner Davison Igbinosun, a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder who Michigan is in on now that he’s in the portal. Igbinosun, who was recruited to Ole Miss by former Michigan assistant Chris Partridge, is visiting the Wolverines Sunday. He entered the portal from Ole Miss due to uncertainty with the coaching staff, including with Partridge having been let go.

He took a visit to UCLA last week, followed by a trip to Ohio State. Tennessee is also in the mix. He’s finishing up his weekend by checking out head coach Jim Harbaugh and Co. in Ann Arbor. He posted a photo from Schembechler Hall on his Instagram story.

Igbinosun is the third-best uncommitted prospect in the transfer portal, according to On3’s rankings. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Igbinosun is coming off an impressive 2022 season with the Rebels, having been named an honorable mention freshman All-American by College Football News. Johnson was listed among the same group.

The Ole Miss standout appeared in all 13 games with 10 starts, registering 37 tackles and 5 pass breakups. His 37 tackles ranked tied for 29th among freshman nationally. He was targeted in coverage 40 times, allowing 25 receptions for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns, according to PFF.

“He came in and already looked like a vet,” Ole Miss linebacker Austin Keys said of Igbinosun during the team’s fall camp ahead of the season.

“Being a freshman and picking up on plays and making plays, that’s a guy I see that is making a lot of plays and becoming a great player,” Ole Miss safety LaDarius Tennison said.

Igbinosun was a four-star prospect and the No. 151 overall player in the country as a recruit, hailing from Union (N.J.) High. Davison logged 211 tackles, defended 19 passes and picked off 7 passes during his high school career.

Michigan has eight scholarship cornerbacks on the roster, but Johnson is the only one with significant experience, outside of graduate Mike Sainristil, who stars at the nickel spot.

The Wolverines don’t have another cornerback who played more than 50 snaps at the position last season, per PFF.

If Michigan does not land Igbinosun, top contenders to start at the open spot are sophomore Myles Pollard, junior Ja’Den McBurrows and freshman Jyaire Hill.
