The Michigan coach touched on the new clock rule where it doesn’t stop after first downs outside of the final two minutes of each half and if there are any adjustments that a coach needs to make because of it.
“It becomes more about possessions,” Harbaugh said. “Possessions are 9/10th of the law. We had seven this past game. The eighth would’ve been Mike Sainristil’s interception that put points on the board — which we love. But yeah, points per possession, ball control, time of possession … and turnovers become even more of a factor.”
Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw for 214 yards last weekend against Rutgers, adding another 51 with his legs. Harbaugh raved about the way his signal-caller played. He also said he saw a lot of positives from the offense as a whole.

“Coming out of this game, to be able to win, to be pretty darn healthy, too — those are great things — and then for everybody to play well and execute and then still have things to lean into to learn from … but to a man, I thought there were some really, really good things, whether it was the running game, the passing game, the quarterbacking was at an AP high level. The receivers continued to excel.
The Michigan coach also broke down what he saw on film from graduate defensive back Mike Sainristil’s pick six against Rutgers.
“The play on the field, I lost where the ball was,” Harbaugh admitted. “I first thought it was on the ground and he was just scooping it up. Could’ve been a fumble. Our guys are trained in practice, if the ball’s ever on the ground, we’re hopping on that mistake and trying to advance it. … It was an incredible play when I got to see it from a different angle. The way he kept his feet — first, the ball skills. He has tremendous ball skills. The athleticism, the balance. We do this slack block control, and he’s really good at it.
