Campbell was asked if there’s a pecking order for the Michigan quarterbacks at practice to begin fall camp. His answer reveals just how wide open the race is.

“Yeah, we’re just gonna start with the oldest to the youngest — simple as that, starting out that way,” Campbell said. “And that’s a fluid operation, that will change daily. We’ll make sure everybody has the opportunity to run with the ones, and we’ll evaluate it on a day by day process.”

Graduate quarterback Jack Tuttle missed spring practices with an injury, but he’s entering his seventh season of college football and is the only player in the position group to have started games (he opened five at Indiana).

“Even though he didn’t practice, he was all around the program,” Campbell noted. “He’s like another coach on the field. Obviously, having the opportunity for the experience in his seventh year, being around other NFL players. He’s been around Tyler Huntley, J.J. [McCarthy] and Michael Penix. That really helps him a lot prepare for the possibility of being the starting quarterback.

Martindale discussed Michigan’s defense and the standard that was set last season, when the group finished No. 1 in total defense, scoring defense and other categories under then coordinator Jesse Minter. Martindale acknowledged that it’ll take different aspects of the game to come together to finish No. 1, even though that’s what they’re striving for.

“There are different opponents, a different offense than what they’ve had, and everything fits just right when you end up being No. 1,” Martindale explained. “I’ve been around some No. 1 defenses, and everything just fits right that season.

“There’s no doubt where the bar is set, and there’s no doubt where I’ll set the bar, and that’s for us to be the best in the country — and I’m not going to hide from that. I’m not going to run from that, and neither are we as a defense.”
