Michigan has worn maize pants on the road only three under head coach Jim Harbaugh. The first time was in 2017 at Penn State, a blowout loss, the second occurrence was a loss at MSU in 2021 and the third time came at the Nittany Lions last season, a 21-17 victory.

The Maize and Blue have mixed up their uniform combinations over the last two seasons, a big change from the first six seasons of the Harbaugh era. Here’s a list of the uniforms Michigan has worn away from home from the beginning of the 2021 season on:

Michigan and Indiana kick off at noon ET on FOX. The Maize and Blue are undefeated and ranked No. 4 in both major polls, looking to repeat their Big Ten championship from last season, the program’s first since 2004.

Michigan leadership council provides input on uniforms

Last year, senior defensive back Mike Sainristil revealed that Michigan’s leadership council has a say in what the uniform combination will be.

“Yeah, we decide that,” Sainristil said. “Coach Harbaugh asks us what uniforms we feel would be best for these games, and that type of stuff.”

The council was something new for the Michigan program last season. It was formed in fall camp and includes roughly 12 players.

“We just laid out a foundation of what this team is going to be built off of, and how us as players are going to take account for everything that happens this year, understanding that everything is on us,” Sainristil explained in 2021.

Sainristil is now one of five captains for the 2022 squad.
