Newsome discussed Michigan’s tight end blocking and its improvement from the first game against ECU to the second one versus UNLV.
“I think they took a big step,” he said. “I didn’t think week one lived up to the standard that we’ve set in the tight end room of how we should block, how we should control the line of scrimmage. We really challenged the guys, and they definitely took a step forward in week two. Had one of our better blocking games as a tight end room in the last 18 months, so it was really encouraging. But, obviously, we’ve got really big challenges ahead of us, starting this week, so we have to keep that up.”

The Wolverines have ‘three starters’ in senior AJ Barner, sophomore Colston Loveland and junior Max Bredeson, each with different tools, that Newsome is trying to implement at the right times for the Michigan offense.
“Every guy has different skill sets,” Newsome explained. “All of the guys in the room are extremely talented, but every guy in the room has different skill sets. We try to put them in position to showcase those skills. At the same time, you’ve gotta keep people honest, so trying to not develop tendencies that when one guy is in, it’s always this or when one guy is in, it’s always this. It’s always a balance of putting guys in position to succeed but also mixing things up.”
Barner, an Indiana transfer, has fit in seamlessly, Newsome said.
“It’s always a gamble,” Newsome stated of bringing in transfers. “Obviously, having [Michigan running backs coach and run game coordinator Mike] Hart here, who had that relationship with him when he was at Indiana, was a huge factor for us, because you have that built-in level of trust and experience with Mike’s time with him. We kind of knew what we were getting.”
