Former Michigan Wolverines football quarterback and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers signal-caller Tom Brady may be 45 years old, but he’s still the NFL’s top player, according to a vote from his peers. Brady checked in No. 1 on the NFL’s top 100 list for a fourth time since the ranking began in 2011.

Brady was the only former Michigan player to make the cut. The player widely regarded as the greatest of all time surged up six spots from No. 7 on the 2021 edition of the ranking.

Brady retired this offseason but returned after 40 days, and the seven-time Super Bowl champion is ready for his 23rd NFL season.

Despite being in the twilight of his career, the former Michigan quarterback has been playing some of his best football. He led the league with a career-high 5,316 passing yards last regular season, 302 more than second-place (Los Angeles Chargers standout Justin Herbert). He also topped the NFL with 43 touchdown tosses, also a career best, and had just six interceptions.

“At this point, Brady’s year-by-year stats are merely padding every all-time quarterback record he holds, but the Bucs QB continues to compete at a high level and is sure to contend for his eighth Super Bowl ring in 2022,” NFL.com wrote.

Brady has landed on the top 100 players list and has yet to receive a ranking lower than No. 14 (2020).

Tom Brady returns from 11-day training camp absence, excels in preseason game

In an unprecedented move, Brady was excused for 11 days of training camp due to “personal” reasons. He returned to the team last week and played in the Buccaneers’ 27-10 preseason loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Brady completed six of his eight pass attempts for 44 yards, looking crisp in his preseason debut.

After the game, the former Michigan signal-caller addressed his absence.

“It’s all personal,” Brady explained. “You know, everyone’s got different situations they’re dealing with. We all have really unique challenges to our life. I’m 45 years old, man. There’s a lot of shit going on. You’ve got to just try to figure out life the best you can. It’s a continuous process.”

He didn’t forget how to play football, though, as evidenced by his performance.

“I feel good,” he said. “I’ve played football for a long time. I’m pretty good at it. Doesn’t take me long for me to remember how to play it.”

Tampa Bay opens up the season at the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football Sept. 11.
