Nine Michigan football freshmen have played, one has burned redshirt in 2024
Michigan Wolverines football freshmen haven’t had much of an impact on the first half of the regular season, with the team beginning 4-2. Nine of the 25-member class have seen the field in games, totaling 131 snaps.
Linebacker Cole Sullivan leads the way with six appearances and 51 snaps, but all but 4 of them have come on special teams. So far, he’s the lone Michigan freshman to burn his redshirt. Players can see the field in up to four regular-season tilts without losing their redshirt.
EDGE Dominic Nichols has earned the most time on defense, logging 20 snaps on that side of the ball, and head coach Sherrone Moore pinpointed him as a freshman who could make an impact in the second half of the season.
“A guy like Dom Nichols, he’s a guy that’s definitely going to impact us in the future but is going to impact us here as we go,” Moore predicted. “Being here for seven years now, it’s usually about Week 6 of 7 that these freshmen start to impact games. He’s a guy that’s going to do it.”
On offense, it’s tight end Hogan Hansen who’s seen the most action. He scored a 9-yard touchdown reception against Arkansas State and was on the field for the game-winning touchdown against USC, due in part to an injury to junior starter Colston Loveland.

In fact, Sullivan, Nichols and Hansen are three of only five Michigan freshmen who’ve played on offense or defense. Defensive tackle Manuel Beigel (3 snaps) and offensive lineman Andrew Sprague (1) are the others. Sprague was in at right tackle on a kneel-down against Arkansas State and traveled to the first road game of the season, a 27-17 setback at Washington, so he appears either in the two-deep of the depth chart or close to it.
Moore also said Sprague could factor into the second half of Michigan’s season.
“A guy on offense is Andrew Sprague, an O-lineman that I think has a bright, bright future,” Moore said after praising Nichols.
Running back Jordan Marshall played in one game but has been out with an injury ever since, returning 3 kicks for 51 yards with a 19-yard long in a 31-12 setback to Texas Sept. 7.
Cornerback Jo’Ziah Edmond and safety Mason Curtis have joined the action lately, playing on special teams each of the last two games — against Minnesota and Washington — after not hitting the field in the first four contests. Both have been featured on special teams.
